What Causes Dysuria?

Im still having a burning sensation after urinating when my doctor says UTI is gone. I was taking the generic cipro (2 pills/ 5 days)and although the sensation has died down its still there. Ive been drinking lots of water, cranberry juice, and cranberry pills so that's not really helping. Ive been tested for stds so its not that. My doctor sent my urine in for another culture, but she says shes sure its going to come back normal and if im still having problems by Monday call and make another apt. What else could it be? oh the only symptom I was having was awkward burning sensation after urinating so I wasn't treated for a UTI for a week because my first culture came back normal.

Hi there,

This sounds like interstitial cystitis, which is a condition in which the bladder is inflamed, and it feels like a urinary tract infection, but there actually is no infection. The symptoms you have (burning) and the fact that the urine culture is coming back normal means that you don't have an infection. Your doctor is correct that antibiotics aren't going to help.

No one knows what causes Interstitial cystitis, but it is due to inflammation that isn't caused by infection, so likely an autoimmune problem. Thankfully, besides the discomfort, it doesn't cause any serious problems with long term consequences. I usually recommend my patients try ibuprofen, and this will often help with the inflammation in addition to the pain. If you don't have any kidney or stomach problems, then you can take about 800mg every 8 hours safely. I'd try this for about 3-5 days and see if it helps.

If you still continue to have problems, the next step would be to see a urologist and see what their recommendations are for treatment.

I hope I have answered your questions. Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions or if you feel I haven't addressed your question adequately.
