What causes double vision?

I Ave experienced a sudden onset of double vision. The first episode happened about a month ago, and the second one again last night. If I cover each eye there isn t a problem. I looked to my left and one image is on top of the other. I look to my right and it is fine. Each episode lasted 3 to 4 minutes.
