What Causes Carunculitis?

What causes carunculitis? I was using over the counter artificial tears for a week as per my ophthalmologist s instructions as I will be having cataract surgey in about 3 weeks. I noticed my lacrimal caruncle in both eyes is extremely swollen. Could the eye drops have caused this? Thank you.
