What Causes Burning Sensation In Chest?

I never get heartburn, but the past 3 days my chest has been on fire. It started after pizza on Saturday night. Sunday I did have more tomato sauce with pasta. I guess it could be the sauce, but I've been eating it all my life and it's never bothered me. Today it was after eating a veggie wrap - mushrooms, spinach, bell peppers, zucchini on a whole wheat wrap. I know tomatoes and pepers can be acidic but would an irritation happen overnight like that? I'm 31 and never had problems with such foods before.

Hello dear,

The symptoms as mentioned in your post can be attributed to acidity & reflux of acid from stomach is caused due to relaxation of the sphincter at the lower part of esophagus.

Management consists of:
1. Lifestyle modification- like weight reduction, sleeping on the left side, or with upper body raised.
2. Dietary modification- avoid consuming irritating substances such as acidic & rich foods, caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol.
3. Medical management- Proton pump inhibitors like Omeprazole, Pantoprazole (which prevent acid formation in stomach)+ Domperidone preparations (strengthens the sphincter & prevents reflux)

If symptoms still persist, it will be better to consult your treating Doctor/ Gastroenterologist.
Investigation like Ultrasound scan of abdomen & Upper GI endoscopy will be helpful in clinching the diagnosis.

Wish you a good health.
Take care.
