What Cause A Hematoma After A Concussion To Increase In Size?

My husband 74 had a concussion in December followed by a hematoma in January. Neurosurgeon recommended monthly MRI. The first 2 mri showed small hematoma slightly less than 1cm. However the most recent taken a couple of days ago showed a proportionally big increase to 1 and 1/2 cm. what causes the enlargement? Should he take steroids? Can t get appt with neurosurgeon for a few more days so concerned. No major symptoms except that he feels he is having a little more difficulty remembering names. Family is now afraid to leave him alone.

Hello!

I passed carefully through your question and would explain that the increase in the hematoma dimensions could be related to high blood pressure or a coagulation disorder. For this reason, I would recommend checking coagulation tests and closely monitor his blood pressure values.

If he is taking any blood thinners, I would recommend stopping them. Regarding steroids, there are different theories about their effects in chronic subdural hematoma. But they may increase blood pressure values in patients suffering from arterial hypertension.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Ilir Sharka,
