Suggest Treatment For Dry Mouth And Loss Of Appetite

My husband is 70 and has no appetite for a while now. He keeps getting up and walking back and forth. He says he doesn t know what to do. He has dry mouth. He s had this for several days now. A couple months ago they increased his hydrochlorithiazide and we were wondering if that may be a reaction. I took his blood pressure and it is good. Do you know the side effects of this drug?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your 70 years old husband has dry mouth for several days now, while taking hydrochlorothiazide a couple of months ago. However, no data regarding use of antibiotics recently.

Dry mouth could be due to dehydration (caused by hydrochlorothiazide use); diabetes (also related to hydrochlorothiazide use) and candida overgrowth (antibiotic use).

So, he needs to get a few diagnostic tests done:
- complete blood count
- diabetes testing
- check blood electrolytes
- mouth swab for candida

For the moment, get proper oral hygiene, gargle with warm water with soda bicarbonate; apply honey orally; avoid citrus/frizzy foods/drinks.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
