The swelling could be just a hematoma (collection of blood) due to the injury caused while playing. He should give proper rest to the part which would be taken care by the shoulder band. If I were his doctor, I would have advised him for an anti inflammatory drug along with a proton pump inhibitor, and also would advise him against going for any active activity in games till this heals up which might take some time.
