Hi: I am 75 Years Old,. Normal weight was about 140 Lbs. Usually,. My wife of 38 years Died 2 1/2 years ago and I had a rough time. and lost a lot of weight for my size I am 5' 9". Everything now is not too bad but I still don't have a really good appetite and I need to get my weight back I am not a Big Eater actually I don't eat much at all I am only about 110 Lbs. I was thinking of getting a prescription for prednisone 20mg. Do you think that would work me to gain and be Ok Thank you Patrick

Thanks for writing in to hcm.

Firstly kindly donot opt for steroids. they are not simple medications and have tremendous side effects. also they cannot be suddenly stopped. The dosage should be always tappered before stopping.

Kindly do brisk walk for 2 kilometers daily . Walking increases apetite. Also eat proteinaceous diet consisting of lean meat , egg whites, milk. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables also.

Donot watch television while eating. Donot drink water before eating. Do mild exercises to increase apetite. Use your hands to eat instead of spoon and fork.

Am sorry for your loss..
I advise you to get a general physical examination done and investigations like thyroid profile etc to find out what is actual problem with your body..if everything turns out to be normal indulge yourself in physical activities which will definitely improve your appetite...
Prednisone is not the choice..the cause of your problem has to be treated..
