Hello, I currently am reviewing my Medicare Part D Scrip coverage and premium. The drug in question is a daily doseage of colchicine .6mg in addition to 100 mg daily of allopurinol prescribed for gout prevention. The latter is an add on as of March of this year while the Allopurnol has been prescribed for several years to reduce uric acid. I have not had a gout attack for several years. I am thinking that the colchicine was possibly added to help minimize night time urination . The issue is that colchicine apparently is a tier 3 medication which significantly increases my out of pocket expense. Can it be eliminated or is there a generic substitution you can recommend ? Thanks. Tom Wilson EM YYYY@YYYY
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
* As per my clinical experience, the Colchicine is used mainly for the acute attacks of gout via its action on neutrophils and macrophages.
* When there are no symptoms of acute gout, I do not recommend Colchicin in daily drug basket.
Still, I will recommend to discuss the same with your doc before stopping its consumption.
Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
