Should Synthroid Have Been Taken After Partial Thyroid Removal?
My daughter had half her thyroid taken out because of a growth, two years ago. Should she have been put on synethroid. She is going thru anxiety, depression, not feeling normal since this happened. She has been going to psychiatrist for medication and none seems to help. (Prozac)
Hi, Welcome to HCM. I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Whether to take synthyroid or not depends on thyroid function. In partial thyroidectomy only part of thyroid is removed and the other half will usually produce enough thyroid hormones and no replacement is usually needed.
What we do after partial thyroidectomy is to test the thyroid function after 3 months. If TSH is above 5 miu/ml, she has to be on replacement with synthyroid, probably for the rest of her life. If TSH is less than 5 miu/ml we can have a yearly thyroid function test for monitoring thyroid function.
Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help With warm regards, Dr Ajish TP (MD,DM) Consultant Endocrinologist.
