Should I Be Taking Atenolol, Atorvastatin, Metformin, Amitriptyline And Biotin Together?

I am a 74 year old female. I am taking the following medication: atenolol..100 mg 1x per day, hydroclothizid 25 mg 1x, hydralazine 10 mg 3x daily for high blood pressure. I also take 20 mg of atorvastatin for cohlestoral, 500 mg daily metformin for diabetes, 25 mg amitripyline for fibromyalgia/anti depressant, 20 mg duloxetine (cymbalta) for fibromyalgia/anti depressant, 81 mg baby aspirin nightly. Also 1 pill of 600 mg calcium/800 mg vitamin D3 2x daily, , Super B Complex and 1000 mg Biotin. Blood pressure is running high & Dr. is trying to control it. Ran out of hydralazine 10 days ago while on vacation. Blood pressure is still running same (checking daily) ie 150/93, 178/105,152/84, 172/89. My question after all this explanation is: Do I really need all this medication? Should I be trying something else? Since stopping the hydralazine, I have found the last few days, I have more energy and am not so tired as I always am. (Am always short of breath, but after numerous tests throughout the years, I've been told some people are just like this). (Excuse me for the spelling??) Thank You!

Hello,

I can highly understand your concern regarding your health issues and so much of medications. Mam, from your query, it is understood that you have hypertension and diabetes altogether with altered cholesterol levels as main major issue.

Usually, after medication and according to recent guidelines, only blood pressure control (plus sugar control) can reduce the chances of future complications of diabetes. And the target BP is below 140/90. In your case and at your age it's highly advisable to add a drug named Amlodipine along with Atenolol and Hydrochlorthiazide. And short of breath. Remember, Atenolol to some extent can worsen it.

Vitamin D-Calcium is necessary at your age. Same for B-complex as per physician advice. Atorvastatin, Aspirin are to combat the complications of Diabetes and hypertension. Anti-depressant seems necessary if advised by Doctor. Mam, I recommend you to get re-evaluated regarding Anti-hypertensive combinations of drug with a Medicine specialist or cardiologist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nipan Chandra Das, General & Family Physician
