How Can Excessive Sleepiness Be Managed While Getting Treatment For Parkinson's Disease And Neurocognitive Disorder?

My husband is 73 years old and has been taking Sertraline HCL 25mg since 8/28. He has Parkinson's Disease, neurocognitive disorder and experiences frequent dizziness. In the past month, he has a hard time keeping awake during the day, but is up and down all night long, saying he feels anxious and crowded. He also has experienced more frequent and more serious dizziness. Since Sertraline is his most recent new med, I am wondering if that could be the cause of the recent problems and behavior.

Hi,

Sertraline belongs to the group of antidepressant medications known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs that is used in the treatment of depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, post traumatic stress disorder or PTSD etc. But someone may notice some side effects in the first few days of consuming this medication.

Side effects are usually feeling drowsy, worsening of anxiety, dizziness, tiredness and fatigue, sleepiness, nervousness, headache, sweating etc. This side effects may be subsided after 1-2 weeks, but generally it may take 4-6 weeks to reduce the side effects. If these side effects persist for long or bother you then you should consult your prescribing doctor immediately for medical help.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
