Itching Lump After Donating Platelet, Bruising. Any Possibility Of Needle Catheter Left Under Skin?

Hi! I donated platelet a year ago and had a horrible experience. The needle site in my left arm started to burn. The technision moved it to the other arm, but I immediately knew something was vy wrong. The most severe, intense, burning pain began radiating down my arm. She quickly ripped the equipment from my arm, applied ice, and profusely began apologizing. I almost passed out from the pain. I am not in any was afraid of needles and regularly donate blood. Tis was my first and last platelet donation.

My arm swelled horribly and bruised a six inch long area of my arm. Intense itching commenced. The donation center was very concerned and offered several times to pay for a doctor to check it out. I turned it down because I thought it would go away. Here it is a year later. There is a visible lump under my skin and it still itches horribly in the site that I felt such pain.. Is it possible that something was left under my skin like part of the needle catheter?

Hi there,
Welcome to HCM.
I understand your concern regarding this. What you suffered from is called phlebitis which is infection of wall of the blood vessel. Anyway, the lump you can feel could be calcification of the infected area of the blood vessel which was punctured during that episode. If any fragment had remained it would have got infected and manifested by now. The needle catheters used do not fragment so easily. I suggest you get in touch with your GP who can examine that lump and reduce your stress. Thanks.
