Is Thyroid Biopsy Done Under Local Anesthesia Or General Anesthesia?

I was told by my dr i have hypothyroid and need a biopsy done to see if it is cancerous. I have been with this dr for five years. Seeing him every six months. He has me on Methiamazoid. He keeps changing the dosage from three a week to five pills a week. To have a biopsy of my thyroid do they need to put me to sleep or just num the area?
