Is It Safe To Use Hormone Blockers To Increase Height?

I have a 10yr old daughter that was born 10 wks premature. She has been diagnosed with premature adrenarche. She developed hair and body oder early and we are concerned about her reaching full genetic height. I am 5 10 my husband is 6 1 up to this point her expected height has been projected to be between 5 9 and 6 0. However, her Dr. thinks she will begin mensus within 6mos and she s just under 5 . She said the current bone age is 10 but she has developed breast tissue. The Dr. is telling us that 5 5 is average and she only hormone blocks to be sure a person is normal able to drive safely etc. If she didn t have PA she would likely reach the taller height. We would like her to have the opportunity to reach the higher height with the help of hormone blockers until 13. Then wherever she is, will be fine. I asked about side affects, the Dr. said it s no fun getting a shot once a month, and some times bone density and weight gain are concerns. I m thinking she can take calcium tables and she is very athletic and eats a healthy diet, so I m not as worried about those side affects. Should I consider hormone blockers as an option for her in this case?

Hi,

I have gone through your question and understand your concern

Please share with us when your daughter had her breast development and hair growth. Have you done any hormonal tests on her.

Having breast development and menarche at 10 yrs is no t abnormal. Only concern here is height. Girls will grow only 6-7 cm after menarche.

If you are very much concerned about height, two things can be done.

1. Give growth hormone- daily injections. You have to check done blood tests like IGF -1, GH stimulation tests , MRI pituitary before starting on this

2. GNRH analogues - once in 3-4 weeks injection. This will delay her pubert so that she can grow for longer period.

In my room practice if the parents are concerned, I will start both treatments so that the final height can be increased by 8-10 cm. We are definitely playing with her normal pubertal and growth hormones. If you are under supervision of a good paediatric endocrinologist, you can do this with minimal side effects.

Hope I have answered your questions. If you have any further queries I will be happy to help you.

Regards,
