Is Elevated RBC Count In Urine The Cause For Memory Loss And Paranoia?

80+ year old aunt with exacerbated cognitive issues over last 2 weeks--memory, paranoia when things go missing . Infrequent previous past events such as this. No UTI but UA RBC was 24. Could this be an infection that would affect cognitive function? Mini mental given was unremarkable.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for trusting HCM

The memory loss, paranoia is likely age-related cognitive changes (dementia) and unrelated to blood in urine. Blood in urine can be due to urinary infection, ureteric stones or kidney/ bladder tumor.
Urine analysis, culture, and CT abdomen is recommended to evaluate blood in urine. Please be advised to follow up with her GP for necessary evaluation.

Hope this answers your question

General & Family Physician Dr. Kathy Robinson's  Response
Hello,
Red blood cells in the urine without other changes are unlikely to indicate infection, but it could represent other problems like kidney stones, or tumor in the kidney or bladder. This needs follow up. In older patients any change in their body may cause cognitive issues. She needs close follow up with her doctor.
