Is Difficulty In Swallowing After A Gastric Sleeve Surgery A Matter Of Concern?

My sister just had gastric sleeve surgery with hernia repair. She has had large amount n/v what appears to be old blood. Her main problem is she is having tremendous pain in chest with difficulty swallowing. She is post op 3 today with iv fluids but is still unable to swallow or manage her secretions. Do not know what type of hernia repair she had, but I am really concerned there is a problem. I’m afraid they will send her home and she will dehydrate. Surgeon and staff are NOT sympathetic or seem concerned. Should we be worried?

Hi,

Probably she may be repaired with hiatus hernia which may cause acid reflux. Probably she may undergo fundoplication surgery. It may takes time to swallow like up to one week.

Drinking large amounts of fluids with meals can stretch your stomach. You may drink fluids between meals as often as you like, but limit fluids to 1/2 cup (4 fluid ounces) with meals and one cup (8 fluid ounces) with snacks.

Sit upright while eating and stay upright for 30 minutes after each meal. Gravity can help food move through your digestive tract. Do not lie down after eating. Sit upright for 2 hours after your last meal or snack of the day.

Eat very slowly. Take your time when eating. Take small bites and chew your food well to help aid in swallowing and digestion. Avoid crusty breads and sticky, gummy foods, such as bananas, fresh doughy breads, rolls and doughnuts.

These types of foods become sticky and difficult to swallow. Please consult your doctor he will examine and guide you in a better way I thought it may be fundoplication but surgery may be different. Please mention the problem.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
