Depends a bit on the reason for the shrinking. Alzheimer's is a case of literal brain shrinkage from the nerve cells in certain brain regions dying off. We do not have very good medication nor treatment for it.
There can be brain shrinkage from alcohol abuse which at least stabilizes if one stops alcohol.
There can be brain shrinkage... not from the brain at all, but the fluid around the brain having nowhere to go. This occurs generally after brain trauma in which blood gets around the brain and clogs up the usual drainage. It is called HYDROCEPHALUS and is treatable by putting in a drain. Generally people with this have both dementia AND also some neurologic problems (stroke like symptoms or abnormal GAIT).
Hope this helps.
