Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You should be proud of your accomplishment of being young at 84 years which is the age of my mother who is also in good health as you are.

If this schedule is outlined for you by a physician then you may wish to check with them for plans to go beyond the first month. But I believe you would really benefit from this to discover WHY you are needing TEMAZEPAM in the first place.

My assumption is that it is being used as a sleep aid. Therefore, do you have a problem with insomnia? Nightmares, Restless legs, etcetera. All of those medical problems can cause problems with good sleep hygiene and all of those can be treated more directly by other means as opposed to prescribing medicines such as temazepam and others that are commonly used.

Remember that as we age, it is normal to need less sleep to feel as refreshed in the mornings. So like anything else in medicine, the need for medicine really revolves around HOW DO YOU FEEL and DOES THE MEDICINE REALLY TREAT THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM or not?

I would recommend you to check with your physician to discuss plans to perform a workup or analysis as to why you are having trouble sleeping. Withdrawing from Temazepam in this way may not work as well as you think if you are only going to every other day. I would've done the taper a bit differently....but again, I'd try and find out FIRST, if there were a REASON or REASONS for my patient not being able to sleep.

I'd be a little concerned for the effects of withdrawing a patient on this drug also for the fact that it is a controlled substance and be careful for the symptoms of withdrawal.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dariush Saghafi
