How To Treat Artery Blockage In The Leg?

My husband has 50% blockage in the arteries in his legs - he can hardly walk - his feet and ankles swell - and we rececntly saw a vascular surgeon who said he wasn t a candidate for surgery?? He told him to start walking and lose some weight??? Um - when he walks his legs and feet hurt!! I thought that the surgery was only a small incision in the groin and the Dr. could clean out the artery or put a stint in. How can we find a Doctor in Southern Ontario that will look after my husband - or at 72 years of age does it matter what is wrong with my husband. Seriously, we both get the feeling that once your over the proverbial hill - the Doctors we have seen - don t care.I don t mean to be rude or nasty - I just wish at our age we could travel a bit and do some sight seeing, but sight seeing requires lots of walking?? And I know there are Doctors out there some where you care. WHERE??

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HE IS HAVING PERIPHERAL ARTERIAL OCCLUSIVE DISEASE.
HE IS HAVING WHAT IS CALLED CLAUDICATION PAIN WHICH IS PAIN WHICH WORSENS ON WALKING AND RELIEVED BY REST.
* IS HE HAVING PAIN AT REST? IS HE ABLE TO SLEEP?
IF YES THEN THE DISEASE HAS REACHED A CRITICAL STAGE.

DID HE HAVE AN ABPI ON HIM? - IF YES HOW MUCH WAS IT?

WHAT I UNDERSTAND IN "WAS'NT A CANDIDATE FOR SURGERY" IS THAT HIS DISEASE IS NON RECONSTRUCTIBLE. AM I RIGHT?
OR IS HE ELIGIBLE FOR BY PASS SURGERIES.?
IF ELIGIBLE THEN IT WOULD BE GREAT.

IF NON RECONSTRUCTIBLE DISEASES, WE HAVE OTHER OPTIONS LIKE
- SYMPATHECTOMY
- VASODILATOR INJECTIONS
- SEQUENTIAL COMPRESSION THERAPY FOR ARTERIES.

ALL THESE CAN REDUCE PAIN AND IMPROVE QUALITY OF LIFE.
