Endocrinologist 's  Response
Hi Christine,

good day. Adrenal gland produces a number of hormones mainly cortisol, aldosterone, male hormones ( major source of male hormones in females), adrenaline and nor adrenaline. Based on the deficiency of these hormones one woud develop many symptoms. Mainly tiredness, low BP, salt craving, vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness on standing up, sometimes low sexual drive etc.

One important thing is that" what is the cause of your adrenal deficiency". has anyone looked in to that??. In the western world, auto immune disease is a common cause. You must also screen for presence of anemia and thyroid dysfunction in that case.

As you rightly mentioned, you should take extra steroids when you are sick and sometimes need a bolus shot of intravenous steroids. It is not clear which medication you are on right now. Often one need another hormone called fludrocortisone along with cortisol ( steroid) hormone especially if the blood pressure is low and if your serum pottasium levels are high. One ofen has low serum sodium levels as well.

If you are ganing weight, that could be due to steroids which you are taking now. An endocrinologist should be able to titrate your dose. You should also be taking sufficient calcium and vitamin D along with steroids to protect your bones.

You must meet an endocrinologist who will be able to help you with this condition. Unfortunatly, i dont know about endocrinologits in your area, but your GP should be able to guide you. I wish you all the best.
