How To Convince My Dad To Take Medicines Properly?
My elderly father has congestive heart failure and sleeps alot throughout the day. I don't think he sleeps well at night. He also has edema and does not take his medication properly. I don't know how to tell him how important it is to take it as prescribed. Today he fell 3 times and seems to be out of it mentally. Any advice?
Thank you for your question. I would say the process of aging is a complicated one as the old person tends to behave as a child and at times has to be treated as one. In some cases, not taking the drug might be due to forgetfulness, in other circumstances it might be refusal to accept that they are ill and do not see the need to take the medication. In any case a condition such as chronic heart failure is a chronic and serious one and the patient has to take the medications properly for a positive outcome. The fact that he fell three times today and is out of it is mentally calls for concern and I think you should take him to his consulting physician for check up and afterwards take him home and admisnister his medications. Proper observance of the treatment in old people is achieved when there is someone to constantly remind them and give them their medication. I wish him a quick recovery.
