How Can Sinus Headaches Be Treated If No Relief Is Obtained After Taking Zyrtec D, Nasacort And Allergy Shots For Mold And Pollen?

Hello, I am currently taking Zyrtec D, Nasacort, and Allergy Shots for Mold and pollen once a week but I am still experiencing very bad sinus headaches with pressure. My nose is not running but advsersely it is very dry. Do you know why I would be still suffering these headaches?

Hi,

I would question the diagnosis of "a sinus headache" in the face of failed allergy or sinus treatment since the "a sinus headache" is one of the most overdiagnosed and incorrectly diagnosed types of headaches in the literature.

The actual incidence of a sinus headache is felt to be about 0.5% of all headache patients while the rate of diagnosing sinus headaches by physicians in patients complaining of headaches, in general, is on the order of 20-30% of all comers.

You can see the disparity between the number of people who are diagnosed with such headaches vs. the number who truly meet criteria for having such headaches.

If treatment for supposed sinus congestion, drainage, infection, etc. fails to relieve a headache then, serious consideration must be given to a primary diagnosis of migraine type headache and appropriate treatment for that type of a headache prescribed.

You may wish to consult a headache specialist or neurologist for such assistance.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dariush Saghafi,
Neurologist
