Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a 78 year old male who often has tertiary pitting edema of the ankles, mostly the right. Recently and on 2 other occasions have had dark purple, bruise looking discoloration of the ankle however there is no pain associated with this discoloration. I become somewhat breathless when I go up and down stairs. I am about 20 lb over weight and I am not very flexible so bending down to pick something up from the floor or putting on my shoes and socks causes difficulty in maintaining a smooth breath. I have hypertension and high cholesterol both under control with medications.
Hello. Thanks for asking on Healthcaremagic. From your symptoms it seems like you are suffering from congestive cardiac failure. It is frequently a complication of hypertension and in this the heart is unable to pump the blood at the required rate. Hence back flow builds up in the veins and such back flow leads to pooling of fluid in dependent parts like legs and feet. You need to see your cardiologist who will do ecg echocardiography to ascertain your cardiac health and treatment will depend upon it. Thanks.
