How Can Memory Loss And Poor Attention Be Treated?

Hello Sir, My mom is 62 yrs old and a housewife. She forgets things and asks repeatedly. This is happening for a period of approximately 2 years. She even forgot my name once. We consult a psychiatrist, he took a memory test on her, she answered some Q correct and some wrong. Doctor did many tests (like thyroid, diabetes etc) and CT Scan also. All results were normal. We are confused between if she really forgets or don t pay attention at all because things which can suffer her like- maid won t come today, she remembers well and thinks about it whole day. Now a days, if we talking about a place where she did not go ever she says I went to that place and these these things happened there (imaginative things). If we disagree she gets angry. These things are happening now a days but I have seen from my childhood that she has a very dangerous anger, she hits herself if someone don t listen to her or things go contrary to her will. She is superstitious, hate to change and don t want to go anywhere, don t have interest in anything and she is very stubborn. Please tell me what is happening with her. What should we do. Forgetfulness is now a days prominent and people whom she talks for a while can notice.

Hi and Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service.
I have read your question and here is my advice.

Forgetting things that are daily routines, should not be ignored. This is what we call Dementia, in medical terms. There are so many reasons for dementia, the most common is Alzheimer disease, however there are other causes as well. Some causes are pretty reversible, while other are manageable. So I would advise you take her to a neurologist, he would assess her in details, and would make a plan ahead.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman
