Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How Can A Bruise And Lump On The Head After An Injury Be Treated?
My 78 year old mum fell backwards on Christmas eve bumping her head on the tarmac driveway. She has vascular dementia and was on antibiotics for a UTI which was causing additional confusion. Therefore, she didn t display any change in normal behaviour after the fall. A golf ball sized lump appeared almost immediately which turned to a bruised lump over the next 24 hours. The bruising has now spread right down into her neck and the lump is still there over a week later. Should I be seeking a medical opinion on this or is this normal? She is also quite bruised on her side and occasionally complains about that too.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
It would be best to take her to be seen for assessment. She may not need imaging if there was no loss of consciousness but she would need to be examined. Imaging such as CT scan is only done if there is a loss of consciousness along with at least one other symptoms (e.g. seizure, memory loss etcetera).
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Michelle Gibson James
