Welcome to HCM,
Dear Kathy,
You have every reason to be concerned. First, with regards to your question on whether the energy drink and hydroxy elite could cause a false positive for amphetamines is almost impossible to determine with any degree of certainty without the label ingredients off of the energy drink and the exact contents of hydroxy elite. Many of these supplements have been caught putting illegal substances into their products duping clients into buying more because it made them feel "good" or "really worked".

It is possible that whatever she was taking caused the positive amphetamine result. It is possible your daughter was not aware of what she was taking in the supplement or that the supplement even contained what it said it did.

I would go slow. Cut out the energy drinks and the hydroxy elite. Encourage her to consult with a sports nutritionist who can properly guide her to the supplements, nutrition and timing of nutrition that will help her achieve her athletic and weight goals. Enable positive thinking but try to re-route her methods.

A local dietitian if in the US may be found by searching for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics or sometimes they are listed in the directory.

By the way, Hydroxyelite is the reformulated Oxyelite that got into trouble for causing the deaths of several military personnel in the US who died of liver failure and others who died of strokes. Then suppliers of Oxyelite were caught at the border with Prozac in the pills. The newer version, Hydroxyelite has DMAA in it, a chemical the Food and Drug Administration is very concerned about regarding its safety. If your daughter was my client, I would not under any circumstances endorse its consumption. And, its presence in other supplements have been blamed for false-positive urine results for amphetamines, but only if you have a large quanity in your system. It (DMAA) may be listed, I have found, under the term geranium oil.

Good luck. Your daughter is very blessed to have a concerned mother as you. Regards, Kathryn J. Shattler, MS,RDN
