Does Cystoscopy Detect Tumors In Bladder?

Hi, I discovered hematuria in routine urine analysis several months ago . I was referred by my family doctor to urologist . I repeated urine tests ,I did two cytology tests in different days about one week apart. The results shows no malignancy and the red blood cells are 0-2 per hpf which is considered normal . Urologist refers me for cystoscopy which I am afraid to do . Do you think that hematuria can come and go in the case of bladder tumors for that I am doing cystoscope ?.or is it unnecessary ?? I am female, nonsmoker , 40 years old, please advice thanks

Hello
Thanks for query .

You have been detected to have microscopic hematuria (Not gross Hematuria)on routine urine analysis .

Microscopic hematuria can be due to infection (UTI).

Please get following basic tests done to confirm the diagnosis
1)Routine urine test and urine culture done to find out the organisms causing this infection and antibiotics to which they are sensitive to.
2) Ultrasound Scanning of abdomen and pelvis this will help to confirm bladder tumor

Please take broad spectrum antibiotics like Cefixime along with urinary antiseptic like Nitrofurantoin twice daily and urine alkalizer thrice daily .Later on switch on to appropriate antibiotics as per culture report.

Get the prescription of medicines from your family Physician.

Ensure to drink more water .

If hematuria persists you may need to get Cystoscopic examination done to rule out /confirm bladder tumor.

Based on the fact that you do not have gross hematuria I do not think that you have bladder tumor.
