Does Appendix Removal Help In Weight Gain?

Hi. My son has always been extremely skinny. We tried everything from shakes etc to get him to gain weight to no avail. He s 13 and weighed 31 kg, he had an emergency appendectomy on February 14, we noticed that since the procedure he is slowly starting to gain weight now. He had an appendectomy scare 3 years ago and it was put down to food poisoning, he also suffered regular stomach upset and ache in the three years. Is it possible that the appendicitis was a long time coming and that having it removed in essence made his body healthier, therefore he is now starting to gain weight normally?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It is helping. It is possible if there is some infection in the body. Weight gain doesn't happen after the appendix is removed. If he is gaining weight, then make sure it's healthy weight gain. Make a balanced diet with protein and fiber rich diet along with fluids in plenty. It will help to maintain good health.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
