Could A Change In Diet Cause Chronic Yeast Infection In The Armpits?

Three months or so ago, I went on a very low carb, no sugar diet, while I lost 16 pounds, I have been battling a chronic yeast infection in my armpits, that anti fungal creams are not helping with! Could the change in my diet, have brought on this yeast problem?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

1. You say to have a chronic yeast infection in your armpits. Can you please send a photo of the affected area to me? I need to analyze myself and see if it is really a yeast infection.
2. Usually, following a high carb diet is associated with increased risk for yeast infection.

In your case, this infection has appeared after a low carb diet. This makes me think that your immune response has dropped, causing infection to rise.

However, that is not the culprit. First, we should determine that this is really a yeast infection, and treat it adequately.

For the moment, keep good local hygiene. Avoid scented soaps. Apply powder talc locally to keep the place dry. Apart anti-fungal cream, I think it's time to start antifungal treatment orally including: Terbinafine and probiotics.

Discuss this further with your dermatologist. Let me know if you have any other concern.

Regards.
