Can Tracheo Esophageal Fistula Go Undetected For Many Years?

I care for an adult who is on thickened liquids to prevent aspiration pneumonia. However through his life he has repeated bouts of this condition no matter what we do for him. Is it possible that he was born with a small Tracheo esophageal fistula that has gone undetected to this point. The person is a developmentally disabled adult in his 50 s that needs continuous 2 L Oxygen.
