Hi. I m currently involved in a sexual relationship with my girlfriend who has herpes, type 2. Is the virus air borne? After sex, I wash the sheet and just recently after she took a shower, she used the towel to clean off her genital section. Is it okay if I wash it and dry it or do I have to replace it and purchase new sheets and towels?
Hello. Thanks for writing to us at healthcaremagic
Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is acquired by direct contact (skin to skin Or mucosa to skin Or mucosa to mucosa) of the virus with either abraded skin surfaces or mucous membranes. HSV type 2 causes genital herpes. The only way it can be acquired in you from you girlfriend is through intimate sexual contact (peno-vaginal Or oro-vaginal sex). Fomites like towels, bed sheet are not going to transmit virus to you. Moreover, the infection with herpes virus is local i.e it stays to the area where it was acquired and does not spread through blood or through the air to other parts of the body or to other individuals
