Can Glycerine Be Used As An Eye Lubricant?

Is Glycerine safe or appropriate to use as an eye lubricant and protectant? My girlfriend feels as if she has something in her eye, and its rather bothersome. Her eye is reddened from the irritation and rubbing, but does not show any exudate or otherwise appear infected. She tried flushing w/ H2O and I tried earlier with sterile saline, but to no avail. It is the weekend, and we live in a small town, and going to an ophthalmologist will be difficult to do before next week.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It is not recommended. Can apply refresh tears eye drop as a lubricant. It will improve if it is simply dry eye.
Get examined by an eye doctor to avoid corneal erosion, computer vision syndrome (reduce an hour of exposure to computer), and avoid contact lenses. Can clean the eye with sterile gauze. Apply neosporin eye ointment at night.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ashok Kumar Dash
