Can Haldol Be Taken While Suffering From Terminal Bone Cancer?

We are caring for my mother who has terminal bone cancer an she is close to the end of her life. we have her home with Hospice and my siblings are assisted by Hospice in her care. Over the last two weeks she has declined and within the last 2 days she in bed ridden and has a foley. She is on liquid morphine every 4 hours and we give a breakthrough dose when needed in between. We were giving Ativan based on her agitation level and Hospice was suggesting to increase dose to 3 tablets of 1mg multiple times a day. Well she became very gibberish and incohearent for days. I being her Health Care Proxy asked if we could stop Ativan due to what i felt was a reverse reaction to what we expects. We then put her on Haldol after stopping the Ativan. We only started with .5mg of Haldol 2 times a day. Once off the Adivan she became non gibberish and very coherent. We were pleased. We were told that if it seemed my mom was restless and agitated that we could give Haldon every 4 hours. Over the last couple days we have averaged close to 4mg of Haldol and i am seeing similar reactions from my mom as when we were giving higher dose of Ativan. I believe we are confusing agitation and with maybe pain and the maybe a morphine issue.Given all this can you advise on the affect of the Haldol given my moms condition. My mom is 83 years old. Thank You john thomas

Geriatrics Specialist 's  Response
Generally a geriatric patient should be given lower starting and maintenance dose of medicine. Any increase in dose should be gradual with lower increments depending upon the clinical response. In case of haldol the maximum daily dose is 20 mg, so for your mother 10 mg daily in divided doses may be recommended.
