Am I Suffering From Syphillis If VDRL Is Reactive And TPHA Result Is 1:160?

Dear Sir,

My VDRL is Reactive and my TPHA result is 1:160. Please confirm if i am suffering from syphillis? what is recommended treatment. I have already completed pencilin injection twice but VDRL is still reactive.

Hi,
Welcome to HCM.

In case of both VDRL and TPHA are reactive, means that you are having latent Syphilis (without any manifestations).
VDRL also must be done and expressed in dilutions for future follow-up and express the prognosis.
Treatment depends upon the duration of infection. Appropriate type of Penicillin injection in appropriate dose and duration are necessary to treat the same. The TPHA is likely to remain positive for ever even after complete and correct treatment whereas VDRL will become non reactive after 6 months to one year following the appropriate treatment.
