Question: qUESTION ON FACE SKIN-ENLARGED PORES:
I AM 64 YEARS OF AGE WITH ENLARGED PORES ON MY FACE ON AND AROUND NOSE. MY ADULT NON-PHYSICIAN DAUGHTER SUGGESTED THE PORES WOULD APPEAR SMALLER IF I ROUTINELY EXFOLIATED THEM. if I SQUEEZE THEM, I ROUTINELY GET WHAT I BELIEVE TO BE SEBUM EXPELLED. iS THIS HELPFUL OR HARMFUL TO EXFFOLIATE SEBUM FROM FACE/NOSE OF 64-YEAR OLD WOMAN?

Detailed Answer:
Hello There,
Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service...

I've gone through your query and understand the concerns...

There are certain aspects of your query, let me get to them one by one...

I partially concur with your daughter, as Exfoliation is indeed required for skincare (not necessarily making the pores appear smaller but for routine skin hygiene)...

Please note that the term 'ROUTINE' here means once a week and not very frequently...

You're supposed to get the sebum expelled in the way your doing, and that's fine, but please ensure a few additional details prior to doing them:

-Always check on the nails, they need to be well-trimmed and cleaned before doing so

-Wash and clean the face nicely with warm water and apply some good quality face scrub every night, put on some soothing night-cream thereafter with least moisturizing effect (from your description it seems like your skin is oily, in that scenario, please use oil-free base)...

-Drink plenty of water, have a good amount of seasonal fruits, and salads throughout the day, have less oily and caffeinated foods (the diets have a direct relation to show up on our skin, that's why eating healthy counts amongst so many other benefits too)...

Since you've asked regarding exfoliation, let me also inform you that there is actually a type of process available as 'Microdermabrasion' where the Dermatologists actually uses some mechanical device (crystals and diamond-based vacuum suction mainly) to remove the layer of the dead skin cells...

Although extreme age limits are there, yours won't be any cause of concern in my opinion (unless you're on any blood thinners, which I don't think you are as not mentioned in your list of current medications)...

It's an extremely effective procedure in the long run (after effects can be several months long) and minor procedure done routinely by any state of the art Dermatological facility on OPD basis only...

Hope you find this useful...

Please let me know if I can assist you further...

Take Care
Kind Regards
