Question: about two months ago I was put on provachol for high cholesterol. Immediately with the first pill I started intense diarreah. I put up with it for about a month and a half. and stopped them. it took a week or two but i went back to normal. then my doc gave me another one and right away it happened again. I stopped it in two days. But somehow for the past 3 weeks things have improved but i still get diarreah once time a day. does it take a long time to heal after being sick for so long on statins.

Brief Answer:
The symptoms usually go away in a few days after stopping the statins.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your symptoms are related to side effects of statins. Usually the side effect symptoms last only for a few days as your body adjusts to the medication.
In your case the symptoms have continued more then normal. I suggest you to stop the medication and consider taking another alternative such as fibrate.

Meanwhile, I would suggest to:
-Use over the counter option such as Imodium
-Use daily probiotics
-drink liquids
-eat plain diet with rice, bananas ,tost

The symptoms may go away in a few days after stopping the statins.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Brief Answer:
The condition will go back to normal very soon, follow the advice above.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again dear,

Diarrhea while using statins is caused by a change in the bowel habits.
It will last as long as the digestive system will get back in balance.
You can do a stool test to exclude possible infections.

Meanwhile, I suggest you to follow the advice that I gave above. You should not be worried, it is a temporary side effect. It will go back to normal very soon.

Take care dear,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi
