How Would Arm And Hand Pain Upon Exertion And Physical Activity?

default
Posted on Tue, 23 Jan 2024
Question: Yes. My wife has an arm that causes her pain at night. She has to get up from lying in bed and walk around and gently shake that arm for a while until the pain subsides. This includes pain in her hand. She has a very physical job moving heavy pails of water around. (Floral Designer) Of late the hours she works has increased to about double and days off are one in about fourteen. I don't think this is heart related as there are no corresponding pains we can identify as related to that kind of event. Is this enough information?

One additional piece of information. In her job as a floral designer she uses her right hand repeatedly making floral arrangements and winding wire around corsages and such. She also uses a stem cutter, with padding she fashioned after pain in hand a about two years ago.

Brief Answer:
By description it appears to be carpal tunnel syndrome.

Detailed Answer:
Hi I am Dr Gopal Goel Orthopedic Surgeon.
I have gone through the description I suspect that she is suffering from pressure on one of the nerves in wrist - Median Nerve. This disease is called carpal tunnel syndrome.
I suggest pain killers and night splint ( to keep the wrist straight) for few days. In the meantime please get her nerve conduction velocity test done.
In the Long run she might surgical release of the nerve.
Thanx for the question . Please feel free to ask any other question.
