Will Blisters On The Inside Of My Upper Lip After A Sexual Encounter With A Person With Genital Herpes Lead Me To Get Genital Herpes Too?

Question: After a sexual encounter, I developed blisters on the inside of my upper lips. When confronting my partner, he admitted to having herpes. His herpes are on his genitals. Will my herpes always display in my mouth and can this be spread to others through kissing? Will I EVER have genital herpes? I am SO confused with the 1 and 2 types. Is what I have the same as regular herpes (in children) or is it something entirely different?

Brief Answer:
Regarding herpes

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you.
I am Dr kakkar (Dermatologist and Venereologist).

Herpes is a local infection. Having oro labial infection does not automatically lead to genital infection. Type 1 HSV usually infects the area around lips, commonly known as cold sores and seen both in children and adults. It is spread through kissing, whereas type 2 infects the genital area and is transmitted sexually.

But could it be “type 2” that I have orally?

And can type 1 AND 2 be spread from the mouth to the genitals?? Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Regarding herpes simplex virus infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Yes type 2 can cause oro labial infection. It is usually acquired through oral sex.
Auto inoculation from mouth to the genitals is rare. Usually, HSV infection in the genital area is from sexual encounter with an infected partner.
