Why Do I Get Severe Headache Whenever Go Out In The Sun?

default
Posted on Wed, 6 Mar 2024
Question: Hi Doctor, When I go out in the sun, even if for 5 minutes during peak hours, my head starts aching really bad.
For today, I have slept for 6.5 hours, woke up at 8:30 AM, had my breakfast at 10:30 AM, had 1 glass of water and 1 glass mazza in the morning, and when I had to stand in the Sun, I got an immediate headache.

I had a headache problem even as a kid, however it has become worse now. I try to maintain a good sleeping habit, but a headache is triggered even if I don't sleep well for one day. I got my eyes tested recently and I'm wearing the correct power lenses/spectacles. Along with headache I also feel nausea most of the times.

Can you suggest next steps, if I need to visit any particular specialized doctor?

Brief Answer:
See a neurologist

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Thanks for posting your query.

So you have a sun-exposure headache. It could be hyperthermia (sunstroke), electrolyte imbalance, photosensitivity of eyes or it maybe a migraine.

If sun is causing headaches, then best cure is to NOT step out in sun. Stay in cool, shady place. If mild painkiller like ibuprofen 200 mg makes the headache better, then continue with it. Otherwise stronger painkillers will be needed. Take ORS after exposure to sun or excessive sweating.

A CT Scan must be done. See a neurologist for further management.

Hope it helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
