Which Drug Can Show Up As A False Positive For Tetrahydrocannabinol?

Posted on Wed, 6 Jan 2016
Question: Can any of the following drugs show up as THC on a drug test? Ibuprofen 600 & 800 mg every 6 hrs, Naproxen 500 mg every 4-6 hr, Percocet 7.5 -325 mg 3 x day, Norco 7.5 - 325 mg 1 to 2 tablets @ 4-6 hr, Diazepan 5 mg, XXXXXXX 350 mg 3 x day, Meloxicam 15 mg 1 per day, Tramadol HCL 500 mg @ 4-6 hr. Have been given this medication over the three months. Went to hospital and was given a shot of Toradol 60 mg/2ml and a shot of Hydromorphone HCL 1 mg/ml. Had to do a drug test for work and came back positive for Benzephines Oxazepam with a GC/MS of 292, and Cannabinoid GC.MS of 174. All this was in my system and the shots were given to me before the drug test at the ER. No one asked what medications I was taking was told the lab it was sent to would. Need to know as I currently been placed on Admin. Leave pending termination in two days. I know since the lab didn't call my employer would come to me to ask what meds I was on and would be given a copy of the results from someone, instead I received a notification of pending termination. I just found out by going to pick up medical records and the test results happened to be in the paperwork. I knew I would fell due to all of these meds, but not for the Cannabinoid and that is what I am being terminated for. LabCorp will not talk to me to give them this list of medications and my 10 years of service with this company is about to be ended. Please tell me if any of these can cause such a positive reading. Please help me figure this out as I am unable to meet with my doctor until next week and my future will be determined in two days.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

You are describing a false-positive THC result.

With modern urine drug testing, this is exceedingly rare nearly to the point of impossible. To pretty much every tester, if you have a positive result, you either ate or smoked cannabis.

In the past, this was not the case, and drugs like proton pump inhibitors, Ibuprofen or Naproxen (two of which you mention taking) would indeed rarely lead to false-positives, but with modern urine testing this is almost never the case.

You should always request a repeat urine drug screen to decrease the likelihood of a false positive statistically, which I can imagine your company would have to XXXXXXX you. This is the next step you should take.
