Question: My partner has a lobulated mass located medially at the left lung apex, with measurements of 3.1 x 2.9 x 2.7. This mass does not appear to enhance following contrast administration and is of relatively low density 15 hu. What does this mean?

Brief Answer:
It looks like a benign lesion but requires investigation to rule out cancer

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. A 3.1 x 2.9 x 2.7 lobulated mass in the in the left lung apex with 15HU is most likely a benign lesion and probably a fluid containing cystic structure. However due to the size of 3.1 cm in largest dimension, a neoplastic tumor is to be excluded.

2. After reading the complete report, I find that old infective chances are there in both lungs in the bases and apices and this is not a contributory finding.

3. In conclusion, a well defined lobulated lesion in lung apex with no enhancement on contrast and fluid density is most likely a not something serious. However there are exceptions and due to the large size, there is a need to follow up closely and to exclude a tumor.

I would like to view any picture that you have on a CD. You can upload to a file sharing facility like dropbox or google drive and send me a download link.

Hope your query is answered.
Please do write back if you have any doubts.
