Posted on Mon, 23 Jan 2017
Question: Hi! I was involved in a mvc last week. I was taken to the ER where they did the routine x-rays. One of which was of my chest.
The report came back and mentioned "Prominent Cardiac Silhouette present". I am a 24 year old female. Is this something I should be concerned over? Thanks

Brief Answer:
Normal!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Firstly thanks for choosing health care magic for your query!

Cardiac silhouette refers to the outline of the heart as seen on frontal and lateral chest radiographs and forms part of the cardiomediastinal contour. The size and shape of the cardiac silhouette provide useful clues for underlying disease.Prominent cardiac silhouette means that all the borders of heart anterior posterior right and left borders are are prominently visible.

Its nothing to worry about. It's just a radiological terminology.if the cardiothoracic ratio is less than 50% on a PA view of the chest its normal.

Don't worry!

In case you have any other query feel free to ask!

Thank you!
