default
Posted on Mon, 9 Nov 2015
Question: My mother is on dialysis they just did a test where she had to keep our urine in ice for one full day and then take it back to the dialysis center to be test the doctor came around today and told her that all of her levels was back up and that her kidney were borderline now .when she started dialysis her kidney function was so low that they thought that she was not going to live but in the past eight months how level has risen to what they say is borderline. Each time she goal to have her dialysis is never more than a half a bag of fluid that they are able to pool all for her and the tests that she did she put out 1100 cc of fluid. Is that a indication that her kidneys is working again

Brief Answer:
Needs re evaluation

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

It looks like your mother has good native kidney urine output which is why there is no inter dialytic weight gain. Removal of fluid makes her de hydrated and prone to cramps during dilaysis. I strongly recommend you to go the following

1. Get a pre dialysis S creat, serum lytes and BUN done. This will tell us how the kidneys are functioning
2. Continue to restrict fluids and salt.Fluid should be less than 1 litre a day and salt less than 3g/day
3. Borderline kidneys can be managed medically without dialysis. One has to have about 600 ml of urine per day for adequate clearance of urea

The indications for dialysis in a borderline kidneys are

1. High potassium
2. Fluid overload and breahtlessnes
3. Severe loss of appetite and vomiting
4. Loss of mental cognitive function

I hope I was of help, if you have any reports at home please upload it so that I can get a better picture of your mother's position
