What Causes Swelling And Pain Even After Physiotherapy For Spiral Fracture?

default
Posted on Tue, 10 Jun 2014
Question: I incurred a spiral fracture of the distal fibula requiring a plate and 8 screws on 3/8/14 by falling on the ice. I am in PT but this is really going slow. PT is painful, I am back to work full time--sedentary desk job and by end of the day have "severe' swelling even with 30-40 compression stockings. Is this normal?
I am using one crutch with 35# of weight bearing.

Brief Answer:
Delayed union may be a cause; Osteoporosis

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for posting
After going through your query the cause may be delayed union for this I need to see your x-ray. The other cause may be osteoporosis that is weakness of bone (brittle bone) is very common. Even if you wear compression stockings it is not advisable to sit for long duration. How your kidney and heart are function? Please tell me in the follow up query.
My advice for you would be -
1. Rest (avoid prolong sitting that is not more than 30 -45 minutes) along with limb elevation.
2. Take balanced diet rich in calcium (1000mg/day) and vitamin D (1000 i.u. /day) along with vitaminB12, B6.
3. Fresh x-ray to assess the union.
Hope this information suffices and I shall be glad to answer any further query.
Take care and wish you good health
