What Causes Spotting While Being On Birth Control Pills?

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Nov 2014
Question: My girl friend has been on the sams birth control for about 5 years now. And here recently she was noticing some random spotting so her doctor prescribed her another combination pill with higher content. She finished the birth control pack she was on and started her period on a friday and started the new birth control 2 days later on sunday. I had her take a pregnancy test after her period just to be sure everything was legit. I was wondering how long the new pill will take to set in and prevent pregnancy since she switched to a different higher content pill and since she started it 2 days after she started her period. We use condoms and birth control everytime no matter what just to be safe but i wanted to know when the new birth control will be effective for preventing pregnancy. Thank you

Brief Answer:
The new birth control will be effective.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The birth control pills act by inhibiting the ovulation. Starting the birth control pill on day 3 gives more than 97% protection against pregnancy. Since you use condom also the chances of pregnancy with double protection are practically nil. You need not worry. She is protected during the ovulation time in this cycle also.

Brief Answer:
No need to worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Starting just two days after the period does not reduce the efficacy much.
It takes 4-5 days for the hormonal pills to take full effect. You need not worry regarding the pregnancy.
Hope my answer is helpful.
