Posted on Wed, 11 May 2016
Question: belly button has a small balloon like bulbous protrusion that has been there for appx 4 yrs during a 20 lb weight gain period…other than looking ugly has never given any problems, I assumed it just stretched as a result of weight gain, but few weeks ago it became sore, red and firmer feeling like firm balloon, any ideas?

Brief Answer:
It is likely that you have an umbilical hernia

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

1. It appears to me that you might have an umbilical hernia. It is a common condition and I come across many patients with thus condition regularly.

2. It is important to consult your doctor and get an ultrasound scan of the area done. Most likely the belly button area has become weak and the fat in abdomen might be herniating through it. Any soreness in the area is a concern and requires a doctors consultation.

3. If confirmed by ultrasound scan, your doctor will take note of the severity of your problem and is likely to plan a surgical management. Please avoid lifting heavy weight and doing intense physical activity till you discuss with your doctor.

Hope your query is answered.
