What Causes Sensitivity To Certain Noises And Mild Earache?

default
Posted on Wed, 7 Dec 2016
Question: 6 to 8 weeks ago I had a flu/ mild chest infection, took a course of antibiotics which cleared that up , but then i ended up with a sinus infection , another lot of antibiotics.. Now I'm feeling like I'm having problems with my ears can't pop them .. it feels like its the eustachian tube.. The most worrying symptom for me is inability to think clearly, almost feel stoned which is causing me to have anxiety. I now have muffled noises (hard to tell where sounds are coming from, & sensitivity to certain noise e.g. vacuum cleaner noise hurt my ears, someone speaking too loud on the phone will hurt my ears & mild earache with slight burning feeling.. I hope i can get to the bottom of this as it is stressing me out & cannot get into the ENT Specialist for 3 months

Brief Answer:
Steam inhalation is the mainstay of treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through your query and understand your concerns. Certain individuals are more prone to catching cold. This involves the oropharynx and creates a vulnerability for the Eustachian tubes on either side (connecting between the inner throat and the middle ear). The purpose of these tubes is to equalize the air pressure inside the middle ear cavity. When you swallow, the air pressure equalizes and the ear pops. Mucus block of these tubes leads to pressure imbalance leading to altered hearing. An audiometry needs to be done to understand the exact nature of the problem. Steam inhalation is the mainstay of treatment. Water in form of vapor will reach deep inside and would help in diluting the mucus, thus providing relief.

Let me know if I could help further.
