What Causes Persistent Blood In Urine With A History Of Kidney Stones?

Question: Hi, can I answer your health question? Please type your question here...I have had blood in my urine for approx 3 and 1/2 wks. i have had MANY kidney stones in my left kidney since approx 10 yrs ago. could all of this blood-it's a LOT of blood-be coming from the stones just moving around ... or what? i have passed several stones during this time.

I appreciate your concern

Yes, RBCs in urine (numerous) can point to either urinary tract stones or an infection. In case of urinary tract infection, pyuria is also there. Urine culture and sensitivity exam should be done. Hemoglobinuria should also be ruled out. Potassium citrate and tamsulosin can be advised to help expel the smaller stones and concretions in addition to fluid intake and urine straining. If the stones are greater than 5 mm then passing them spontaneously or with medication may not be viable. Lithotripsy or minimally invasive intraluminal removal can be advised.
