What Causes Painful Swelling On The Finger Joints?

default
Posted on Sat, 8 Apr 2017
Question: I injured the finger joint on my middle finger right below the nail. This was 6 weeks ago. Some pain, but nothing extreme. No problem until just this week and now its slightly swollen and red in that area. Although my finger is slightly bent in that area I have had little problems functioning with the knuckle injury. Does this warrant a trip to the Doc?

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history.
Noted the history of middle finger distal joint below the nail - 6 weeks ago - some pain - slightly swollen with redness for a week - slight bend but little problems functioning with knuckle injury - treatment tried noted....
Yes, this warrants a visit to a Doctor and get a reference for an Orthopedic and/or hand Surgeon for clinical evaluation, examination and investigations like X-ray for knowing hte exact position and extent of the injury.
By 6 weeks usually all such injuries heal well; appearance of redness with slight swelling after 5 weeks needs proper evaluation and further management.

I was afraid your answer would be a trip to the Doc. My hands are my livelihood and I guess I should have had it checked out when it first happened.
I think maybe I was hesitant thinking the injury may have needed surgery and that would mean time off work.
I am hoping I have not created a further problem by not addressing with my Doc in the first place. Lesson learned......Don't hesitate
Thanks Doc! Off to MY Doctor!
